Pause Button

For most of our adult lives, Matilda and I have been back-to-back guns blazing. From med school to residency to law school to new careers and new houses to 3 kids in 3 years, we've mostly been in survival mode. Sure, we've been able to appreciate the journey most of the time, but the collective feeling of the last decade has been subdue and advance. So much so that it took us both almost a full year before we realized we are finally at cruising altitude.

Matilda is finally on the descent to Marine retirement. Whereas I don’t think he will ever take that hat off completely, being able to grow a beard for any length of time will improve both of our moods greatly.

Snacks is 6 now. His kindergarten year was a breeze for all of us. Thankfully he is smart enough to not have to pay close attention and still make his grades. He is also cute enough to get away with said inattention. He wants to start Parcour this summer which fit in with his long term goal of becoming a warrior.

Honeybadger has finally hit her stride. Years 3 through 7 were pretty touch and go. I think she was struggling to figure out her schtick and with that came quite a bit of angst.  With the arrival of more estrogen in the neighborhood along with becoming the proud parent of a guinea pig, her nurturing side has bloomed into a sight to behold. She is ever doting and protective of younger mammals. Anything older than her, however, is still considered prey. She is waffling between becoming an author, a veterinarian, or singer. Given her vocals, we are pushing for the former two.

Melman finished 3rd grade this year and is starting his 10th year going around the sun. His energy still knows no bounds but neither does his joy or generosity. He continues to be our family’s moral compass and jet propulsion. Future goals are likely artist or perhaps engineer.

As for me, I’m 8 years into my career and fairly content to ride this wave of stability for awhile. One of these days, I’m going to get around to changing our healthcare system but right now I perfectly content to let the autopilot go for as long as the skies are clear.
